South Africa's culture and heritage could regain its rightful place in positioning South Africa as a "must-see" long-haul destination with the launch of a new national strategy this
month.
The national heritage and cultural tourism strategy, launched by Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk earlier this month, has been described as the "first blueprint
for heritage and cultural tourism development in South Africa".
Heritage and cultural tourism is undervalued in South Africa, says Paul Miedema, owner of Port Elizabeth-based Calabash Tours, a tour operator that specialises in cultural
tours. "As a destination, we assert our African status by and large on our wildlife and our landscape. Politically, lip service is paid to the importance of heritage and culture, but within the
private sector, there seems to be an underlying resistance to packaging it."

Hundreds of millions of people, businesses and governments around the world unite each year to support the largest environmental event in history – Earth Hour.
More than 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries worldwide switched off their lights for Earth Hour 2011 alone, sending a powerful message for action on climate change. It also ushered in a new era with members going Beyond the Hour to commit to lasting action for the planet. Without a doubt, it’s shown how great things can be achieved when people come together for a common cause.

This is a very cool initiative - Earth Junkies. The mission of The Earth Junkies Project is to create awareness for the environment’s wellbeing and foster ecological citizenship among children. The Earth Junkies Project uses storytelling, a universal and traditional art form. Storytelling has featured strongly in all cultures as an effective communication tool. Storytelling also plays a fundamental role in learning: Stories help children organise our varied, daily experiences, acting as a reference point to decipher the world around us.

We recently came across this great article by Sue Watt, Courtesy of Independent Newspapers.
When I asked Maria, a quiet 15-year-old with an engaging smile, what she wanted to do when she finished school, she looked me straight in the eyes and said: “I’m going to be a doctor.”
Such aspirations from a young girl in a remote Zambian village might be met with derision, but this is Kawaza, and Kawaza makes things happen.

Responsible Tourism, one of those phrases often heard and thrown about, but seldom understood and effectively practiced in a South African context.
What is responsible tourism?
The South African White Paper on Development and Promotion of Tourism describes responsible tourism as: "Tourism that promotes responsibility to the environment through its sustainable use; responsibility to involve local communities in the tourism industry; responsibility for the safety and security of visitors and responsible government, employees, employers, unions and local communities."
